The embryo of PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (Pupuk Kaltim) constituted fertilizer offshore production facilities established on two ships of state oil and gas company PT Pertamina. Based on a presidential decree No, 43/1975, the facilities were moved on shore for technical reason. In 1976, Pertamina handed over the management of the facilities to the Industry Ministry. In 1977, the ministry established PT Pupuk Kaltim to operate the fertilizer factories over a 493 hectare4 plot of land in Bontang, East Kalimantan.
Through a government regulation No. 29 of 1997 the entire capital of the government in the company because the equity of PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja (Persero) as the holding company for all state-owned fertilizer producers, Pupuk Kaltim had an authorized capital of Rp 3.3 trillion with issued capital fully paid at Rp 936, 232 million.
In 1998, ten pieces of share of PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja were sold to the Yayasan Kesejahteraan Hari Tua (YKHT) Karyawan, a foundation of the workers of PT Pupuk Kaltim, The sharehodlders, therefore, were composed of PT. Pupuk Sriwijaya (Pusri) 99.99% and the foundation 0.01%.
In 2000, its authorized capital was raised to Rp 6.600 trillion with issued capital fully paid at Rp 1,665 billion. In 2007, its statutes was changed from a public company to a non public company.
Currently PKT has a number of subsidiaries operating in industrial estate business, melamine industry, engineering and fertilizer trading.
Pupuk Kaltim operates 4 ammonia plants and 5 urea fertilizer plants since 1984. Its urea fertilizer product is available in granule and bulk. Ammonia is produced through a reaction with high pressure in the process of producing urea. Pupuk Kaltim also produces a new fertilizer product called NPK Pelangi. NPK Pelangi gives greater productivity by 40% to rice.
It is easily spread and dissolved in water and give greater strength to rice stalks. It is good as fertilizer for various plants and it is safe for the environment.
All units of factories (Kaltim 1, Kaltim 2, Kaltim 3, Kaltim 4) and POPKA of Pupuk Kaltim are located in Bontang, East Kalimantan. The factories use natural as feedstock supplied through a 60 kilometer pipeline extending from Muara Badak to the Bontang industrial estate in that province.
Pupuk Kaltim received the ISO-14001 certificate from BVQI and frm BV in 2004, second recertification of ISO 14001 in 2004 .
